Meet Zhongyang Zhang

Tell us a bit about yourself

I'm a Data Science PhD candidate from China mainland, my undergraduate university is Huazhong University of Science and Technology (HUST). My undergraduate major is electrical and information engineering. I want to study some "my own interests" other than simply accomplish assigned tasks in a company, that's why I wanted to start a PhD program.

What are you studying/researching?

My main research area is event camera-based vision and healthy gaming.

Tell us about your campus involvement at UC San Diego

I'm actively involved in events organized by the Nikkei and Chinese student clubs at UCSD and enjoy mentoring both undergraduate and master's students. The recreational classes here are exceptional; I've taken archery, hand sewing, taiko, and kendo, which have greatly enriched my life. Living off-campus, I often indulge in photographing the campus, capturing various facets of buildings and scenery under different conditions. But my ultimate favorite activity in San Diego is watching the extraordinary sunsets, especially with the numerous beaches available for exploration.

Why UC San Diego?

Well, I move to UCSD as a part of a lab relocation with my advisor, but yeah, I applied UCSD intially during my PhD application season as well. UCSD is located close to the pacific ocean, and the weather here is nice. More significantly, the diverse population offers endless opportunities for interaction and friendship, creating an atmosphere I find both physically and mentally stimulating.

Have you been awarded any fellowships?
